DayZ News: New DayZ Standalone info Surfaces: Release Dates, Stealth Kills, and more!

Huge news coming down the pipeline. A few days ago there was a AMA (ask me anything) session on Reddit where DayZ creator ‘Rocket’ talked openly about the upcoming changes to ‘DayZ mod‘ and ‘DayZ full‘.

The DayZ full alpha is on the road-map to be released at the end of 2012. You may not notice it at this point but, this is huge news. Just wait till you finish reading this post and see all they have plans for.

It seems like DayZ will too mimic the way the hugely successful Minecraft was launched. Meaning that they will start selling tickets into the alpha at a steep discount for all the early birds out there itching to take the worm. I heard it would start around $15 and work its way up to $30 when its ready for the full launch.

One of the things I really like about DayZ is how much impact the players have on the game by posting their thoughts and suggestions on forums. By saying they would focus more on improving the game architecture before they work on features, it really shows how they listen to complaints and want to fix things for us.

One of the biggest out of the box changes will be the new map, ‘Chernarus Plus’. The map will be more focused on DayZ gameplay which means there will be more buildings you can rummage through and it will be easier to tell which buildings don’t have loot. I’m guessing they will probably look a little more dilapidated or destroyed than the ones with goods inside. Check back soon for a tutorial series I’m working on to help those of you that are currently having problems with this.

There are also talks of more melee combat which I personally have been waiting for. I hate holding a hunting knife in my tool belt and not being able to come up behind a zombie and silently slice their throat from ear to ear and watch as their coagulated infectious blood run down their shirt and permeates the air with the putrid stench of un-death…or, you know, stab a player in the back…Sorry, I had a moment there….I love stealth kills…

The Dogs update I posted about last week, was also mentioned to be released as part of the next big DayZ mod patch v1.7.3. They seem to be continuing the tradition of using the mod as a platform to test their ideas then seeing how players react to the changes before making their final decision on whether or not to keep it for DayZ full. Rocket added, “Expect them to track, to warn you of danger, and to follow you. And then get shot. And then you QQ.”

The folks over at DayZHQ created a great list with all the highlights from the AMA. Thanks for the heads up fellas!

General Information

  • Target for release is by the end of the 2012 working year.
  • The release will be for the public alpha version, i.e. not the stable release.
  • The standalone will provide the dev team with absolute freedom, and they will utilize many aspects of the Real Virtuality engine, not limited to the ArmA 3 version. It will be their own branch of the engine.
  • Alpha will be heavily discounted, and the end product will never be a fully priced retail product. Rocket mentions that he can’t picture a price over 25 euro (30 USD) for the final.
  • No pre-ordering, but there will be a premium/collector’s edition available with swag like art prints and concept work.
  • The game mechanics will stay as they are now.
  • Focus will be on re-developing game architecture first, and then development of new features.
  • There will be no “endgame”, but rather continued gameplay decided by the individual player. Kind of like Minecraft before The End was introduced.

New features

  • A new map, “Chernarus Plus”.
  • Chernarus Plus will have more interactive (enter-able) buildings. Non-interactive buildings will be easier to spot.
  • Hand combat, in addition to the melee weapons we already have.
  • Dogs can be a survivor’s companion. “Expect them to track, to warn you of danger, and to follow you. And then get shot. And then you QQ.”
  • There will be no safe areas on the map.
  • A quiver for crossbow bolts.
  • Weapon and gear degradation.
  • A diary system, allowing other players to see notes left by you when you’re offline, not around, or dead.
  • A robust web interface, as previewed at Rezzed earlier this summer.
  • Narrative that will describe the virus background.

Improvements over the mod

  • More weapons. Many of which are custom, “find at home” style weaponry. Cricket bat, anyone?
  • Zombies will not switch to walking when indoors (once pathing for zombies is fixed and their lifecycle is implemented).
  • More clothing and player customization, including colors and face.
  • The humanity system will be fine tuned.
  • More robust weather system, redesigned from scratch.
  • Zombies will be much more frightening.
  • Improved broken limb system.
  • And entirely new hive syncing system.
  • Improved anti-cheat measures.
  • Improved player UI. The inventory is being reworked from scratch.
  • The female character will be feature complete.
  • Better performance, including faster loading.

Future plans

  • More islands other than Chernarus, created by either the dev team or the community. Players will travel to them by boat or air.
  • Increase max player count. 100-200 would be easily achievable, but any more would require a larger map.
  • More wildlife. “Horses would be cool too.”
  • Animations will be improved.
  • There are vague mentions of a revised server hosting scheme.
  • Add “methods that allow players to create their own systems for things, so if they wanted to create such a system they could”. So perhaps think about Garry’s Mod and how players can program in aspects that affect their own gameplay. Not sure on this one.
  • Underground “bases” and other construction, but Rocket mentions that it’s a pretty ambitious endeavor to develop.
  • Group play and faction support.

Current DayZ mod version

  • The current mod version of DayZ will continue to be updated, and will become more open.
  • Dogs will be coming to the mod (in the next update, v1.7.3) before the standalone.
  • The possibility of private hive servers.
  • Lingor Island may be coming to the mod.

    Absolutely awesome to see this. I stream DayZ on twitch constantly with QuickNap Gaming and we can’t wait to see where this game goes. Reading this really gets me excited for the future and I can’t wait to play it and show it to my viewers! Thanks for the update!

    Sounds great to me. A kinda mechanic i would love to see in the game would be; The ability to have players to make a sacrifice to stay alive, at the moment you either keep everything you have and survive or loose it all and die. It would be nice if people could be ‘set back’ witn out dieing. For instance, ditching ur pack to allow you to run fasters maybe jump. so you can bail out of a sticky situation that you normaly would not be able to survie. maybe ditching the pack is a bad idea but something oike that so there can be a middle ground where someone can win out and someone can loose out with out anyone needed to die.

      Yes! It would be interesting if you could drop your backpack or even improve controls for the smoke screens or even the ability to throw a flash bang.

    Great article and an all round interesting read.

    Only one point made me twitch though .. the non-walking zombies in doors.. thats a shame because they are currently unbalanced and its really the ONLY break we have vs them .. your only chance to really get the upper hand.

    Other than this it all sounds fantastic.. looking forward to it all.

    I like Pigzy’s comment, dropping your pack to run faster makes sense, or dropping your pack to draw off a few zombies.

    What DayZ needs, in my mind, is dynamic herds of roaming zombies that travel the entire map, breaking off into small groups and reforming at random.

        Sure, and maybe they could form around some type of zombie Leader/Boss that gives an added advantage when you kill/loot him/her/it. Right now zombies only spawn around players, though, so idk if that’d affect the performance at all to have so many randomly roaming around. If so, there probably would only be 1 or possibly 2 hordes in the map at one time, given that the “average” number of zombies in a map is usually a few hundred anyway (don’t quote me on that).

        Also, there would have to be plenty of them to pose a serious challenge for even a small group of 3 or 4, with a solo mission being nigh upon impossible. So maybe like 50-100?

        Furthermore, and idk if they or their leader would be smart enough to do this, you could possibly have scouts/stragglers that alert the rest of the horde. Or the dogs could also help alert you to a horde. It’d be hilarious (and obviously terrifying) if someone didn’t realize these zombies were any different, then a minute later had the whole horde barreling down on them.

    you know i have really had that running through my mind lately, how cool would it be to have a “wandering herd” of zombies just pretty much randomly roaming around the map, ESPECIALLY if they cut through the woods every so often, thus taking away the relative safety of the woods. I think 20 would be plenty, but im not sure about having the herd “pick up” stragler zombies would make it too difficult or not, but definitely at least one awesome item on a zombie in the crowd to make it worth trying to survive or forcing good team work when picking a fight, then again i think it would be cool if just a few zombies wandered around the map independently and into the woods ever so often, too many people picking fights in the tree line, make it more dangerous i say.

    OK I’ve been saying it for ages but the following things added to DayZ would do it for me.

    01. Horses – that you can actually ride
    02. Zombie Hordes roaming through the map stumbling across hidden camp sites etc
    03. Finding a helicopter crash site is great, but seeing it actually fly close by and then crash, and then tracking it’s crash location while everyone else is doing the same would be epic
    04. Random events – A military strike on a random town at a random time, a few choppers fly in loaded with soldiers with orders to sweep the town, destroy anything. Now what do you do, do you flee into the woods and watch it all go down from the safety of the tree line? Or do you stand with others in that town and take them out and as a reward get their gear and vehicles?
    05. Fishing – I mean cmon it’s a no brainer, water everywhere, let’s put some poles or hand lines into the loot spawn and start actually using the boats etc for something, cook the fish the same way you do meat.
    06. More vehicles, let’s ace it, in a real apocalypse, everything is gonna be just left there, so please more vehicles especially air related.
    07. Better Vehicle control, the Huey is great, the cars etc suck

    Anyway just a few things that would make the game a lot better for me.

    I watched a mate play for a few hours the other day, and I’ve watched a lot of Youtube vids of playtime. I’m wondering why the authors of the game decided to make the players so weak? I ride motocross & get outdoors a lot, on a ride day I take hits the players in the game die from. I regularly make jumps and falls and stacks that would kill the player in the game? Even when I was doing cadets, laden with a pack, I survived jumps and drops that would kill the game character. Hell, I’ve bounced off trees in my motorcross armor @ nigh on 60kph and apart from being winded & bruised and pretty cranky, I’ve got back on the bike and ridden the rest of the day out. Like a man, not a weakling little pansy.

    My mate had his player hop off a small rock and he broke his legs. I was like “dude, what is your player? An Osteogenesis Imperfecta ridden midget? That was pathetic.”

    That said, this is the first game in the last 2-3 years I am genuinely really interested in. I am really following this with interest. I just think the author needs to meet some guys who actually get outside and do exercise, to get a realistic understanding of what we guys can take. Hell, even my 13yr old cousin, a slender little waif of a girl, is tougher. The damage model in the game doesn’t even do justice to weaklings, let alone something pretending to be a humanoid male.

      Well if your gonna get all “that’s not realistic” then I guess they need to make you collapse from exhaustion after sprinting for an hour non stop. And faint from sleep deprivation and so on and so on. Who knows, maybe your mate had his knees locked when jumping off the boulder.

    The ‘feature’ I’m worried about:
    Weapon and gear degradation

    Several games with this have gotten it SO wrong. A rifle or handgun does NOT wear out after running a hundred rounds through it. I could see having to clean and maintain your weapon to keep it from jamming (cleaning kits as loot). But having it wear out and possibly break after a day or two? NOT realistic…

      He talks a little bit more about this and seems to have the same idea you have.

      “We are looking at weapon durability and being able to repair weapons. We don’t want weapons to break because that usually doesn’t happen often in real life but, dirty weapons do jam…”

    how fun would it be if we could die from infections? i dont mean like in the game right now, but a small chance to get infected by a zombie, and having a somewhat special death effect.. like you start spitting blood or something.. ofcourse we would need to fix it with an antidote or something similar.. at least something easy to get..

    also.. hostages… i mean.. a rope so u can tie the hands of your hostages or something similar… funfunfun

      There is already a “disease”, curable by antibiotics, that causes you to cough and attract zombies, but I do think you should be able to die from it.

      Also, another awesome and painfully obvious feature – zombie + you + death = dead zombie you. Why are players immune to zombieism??? Plus it’d make it a lot more interesting for you to find and loot a victim’s corpse if that corpse was walking around like all the others.

    I really hope they don’t just blanket the map with zombies, I don’t mind jogging for half-an-hour with no danger of zombies in the wilderness with the current build. It makes more sense to me that zombies and players would be a much higher threat in loot areas than in the woods.

    Wow, I can’t wait for the stand alone version. I’m currently not playing the dayz mod, because I find it wasteful buying the Arma game first, i’d rather support the dev group of the dayz game itself and spend $30 on your finished product. I waited this long for a great zombie mmo survival game , waiting a couple of months doesn’t deter me. Keep up the great work, I am watching and checking up weekly to know if it’s available.

    I’ve never playd the mod, but i’ve been watching vids on youtube. One thing that I didnt like was that zombies only spawn near players. They should spawn everywhere, one or two in the woods and alot in the towns. The reason is that people that call themselves “bandits” go out looking for noobs and other players to kill (I have no problem with this, I think it makes the game better), but they look for zombies and then they know where another players. So the zombies give away ure position and that is a spoiler. And another thing is that i think zombies should have items on them (not all of them but some) like food or bullets or knifes, but no guns. And!!!! that zombies fall whan u shoot them and not stand there for 5 mins then fall. Then this will be the best game eva!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      They do occasionally have basic loot on them, but it’s just that so few players even bother with it.

    If you do kill a zombie with a hunting knife, you shoudl have to clean the knife before gutting or killing animals that you are going to eat or you could get infected?

    Saying that we dontn know how the virus transfers i woudl think via blood transfer or eating infected meat. so using the knife you just killed a zombie with to gut a cow could cause problems.

    maybe you could use the wepon cleaning kit to clean the knife or you could burn the knife in the fire to sterlize it?

    I full-heartedly hope the developers never make the mistake of attempting to add any semblance of a storyline. It’s not part of what makes the game as great as it is now, and it never will be. It would completely undermine the sense of freedom and self-dependency that permeates the entire experience. From the moment you spawn in to when you find your first weapon and have to protect yourself to the moment that you inevitably die and start the whole process over again, you are only yourself, making choices and fighting battles and just surviving in a specific way that only YOU would do. Just as the developers themselves recognize, “This is Your Story”. All of the most popular updates inevitably EXPAND the game in some way, giving each player more options and yet more opportunities to express their own unique style of gameplay. By contrast, any sort of mandatory storyline would be a step in the exact opposite direction, restricting the player by giving them less options and drawing more of their attention away from the main survival aspects of the game.

    Instead of trying to fit an entire new storyline onto the existing architecture, I would recommend that changes be limited to individual plot points, completely optional events that occur randomly or customizably under the jurisdiction of individual servers. If, for example, a player wished to play with more zombies or vehicles or large factions, then they could easily find a server to accommodate them.

      That is true. They shouldn’t MAKE you do things, but a nice “general” system should be nice.
      Like self goals:
      Find a weapon
      Find food and drink
      Find a vehicle
      Repair a vehicle

      Just little achievements that make you feel good when you accomplish them.
      “I just got my first gun and ammo! And I was rewarded for it!”
      Things that are a general outline of what you SHOULD do first.

      My question:
      Will there be singleplayer?

    The “There will be no safe areas on the map.” line has me worried. If we’re talking about a few zombies wandering around in the wilderness that’s one thing. But hordes of them spawning in the middle of nowhere and wandering around is terrifying and not in a good way. Though if dangerous animals (Bears, wolves and Tigers, since it’s set in Russia.) were added to the wilderness, that would be awesome. Get some dangerous game in there. But then again I think more animals and a bigger variety of them would be an improvement in general. I would love to be able to hunt deer in the black forest or stalk elk through the mountains.

    I was wondering if you could pitch this idea to rocket or either of the teams developing the stand alone, “gun customization in game”, for instance you need a tool box (or a weapons maintenance kit) and you have a acog sight and a M4A1 or Ak74 and you can attach and detach.
    Items for weapon add-on’s can be found like any other loot, because it would be awsome finding a silencer out fitted for a rifle and attaching it to a DMR or ASS50 and finding camo, so you have the ultimate sniper weapon outfit with your ghillie.

    Also ghillie suits should have thermal strips to prevent that L85A2 AWS or they can be mended with thermal strips to make ultimate ghillie also bullet proof vest could be found and warn over clothing :D.

    PS- I’d pay for a DLC full of extra weapons, the more the better πŸ˜€

    Seeing the note thing would be pretty cool easy way to interact with players that are friendly telling them to meet with you or something to team up or for new players hints on stuff I guess idk but it all seems great can’t wait!!!

    I cannot wait for the release of the standalone. I do not yet have the DayZ mod, or any ARMA game, but i am seriously considering buying it. Does anyone have a better knowledge on the release of the standalone, because i am buying a better stup in rder to play games, but i dont wat to buy the ARMA games if the standaloneis reasesed a week later.

    Finding walki talkies, short range, medium and long range. The long range could be used to call for outside military support evacuation, supplies?

    Also I like the idea of rebuilding society, building a cabin, farming, hunting, etc.
    Dead players should become zombies, equipped with the stuff they were left with.
    People should be able to find an antidote and rescue their zombified friends.

    Maybe there can be a limited resource and item and zombi mode, where the number of zombies and items are limited. When the zombies are exterminated, an enemy army lands on shore (like in operation flashpoint resistance,) and attempts to occupy the land, where upon the entire player population needs to unite and fight off the invading army?

    After that different factions may evolve and a nice civil war starts until the last man standing.

    Maybe this is a bit too realistic…

    I have never played DayZ But have watched every episode of FrankieonPCin1080p
    and I have some things I would NOT like to see in this game.

    1. “No safe areas” – This wouldn’t feel very realistic (although zombies do not = realism) I would find it more plausible to find hordes of zombies around crash sights, towns, cities and military bases but not wandering the forest. Bears and other predators would be cool but in moderation (See: Far Cry 3)

    2. “Weapon Degeneration” – To what extent is this? Would it be to a minecraft extent where you can fire the weapon 10 times and then it breaks? or the other path where if you don’t strip and clean your weapon it will jam? The later being the better.

    With those said however the idea of being able to build certain things like huts and/ or proper buildings depending of if you have found the right tools and materials, would be something that could work.

    However if im fairly confident that whatever is done it would be done in the best interest of their players.

    I bought DayZ for Christmas so i have only for 5 days, but i have noticed some problem:

    1. The inventory system, if you are being chased by a group of zombies and you need ammo or a weapon you have to stop, crouch and then sort through the loot on the ground, that takes a lot of time you usually don’t have
    The interface needs to pop up as soon as you click gear and be able to pick up stuff a lot faster.
    And be able to open your backpack to see the slots without having gear on the ground.

    Also you need to have three weapon slots: Main weapon, Side arm and Melee (Hunting knife, axe or even a crossbow bolt)

    2. Your Health, It need to have exact numbers or at least a percentage, and with your temperature it needs to have the degree displayed in the little thermometer.
    Also what normal human breaker there leg from falling 1 meter. πŸ™‚

    3. Vehicles, i dont mind the controls but the health of you car is hugely inaccurate, what normal car would loose a wheel if the ran over a small bush or destroy its engine by brushing a tree going 2 m/h.
    And you should be able to salvage parts form broken cars with a toolbox

    My idea is to add doors to buildings/houses and be able to block them either with furniture or boards/wooden plank and nails by a hammer to prevent the zombies to enter into the buildings in some minutes (maybe 3-5 min). The duration of the blockade depends on how heavy the furniture is or how many wooden planks are used. The survivors hold the door back/shut while blockading it. Then the survivors have a little time to loot, take a breath, and prepare to fight all the zombies behind the door or escape through a window or something like that.

    Since zombies will even run indoor I think this will be a good idea/feature.

    I think this will increase the excitement of the game and make it even more scary/terrifying.

    When you die from Zombies you can actual spawn as one in one life cycle but for survive you need Braaaaaaains πŸ˜€

    other players shoud not see if you are npc or human player zombie πŸ˜€ coud end very nasty XD.

    Maybe sight is limited and you coud hear better showed to the player by some optical effect (Radar ? )

    I think a neat update or feature in the standalone DayZ would be upgrading vehilces. ex. Using scrap metal and toolbox to place sheet metal over a car for protection

    I just hope the game might be more social, even though it is quite okay right now. just i HATE campers sitting on a hill and killing players for no reason? there should be more groups and maybe the island built on cheranus could be a island for experienced players, and cheranus for new people, me included πŸ˜€ kinda like a friendly zone, that still has PvP.

    I think you need to put limited matches , becouse now u can use 1 box unlimited time.
    And mags…They are always full , you can something like mag with 4 bullets or 3 , it will add more realism. πŸ˜‰

    They actually need to fix the combat logger problem. I mean if, by any chance, they add something like taking other players (unconsicious, wounded, unarmed) hostage, they need to add something like you can’t log out at those times. Or if you do you are banned for like 1 day so players would not combat log.

    I have a thought,maybe the zombies run slightly faster than you. Maybe the zombies could make scarier sounding sounds. And if your being chased by alot of zombies,your character would begin too scream. Another possibility would be if your running too long and your being chased,because you have adrenaline and fear pumping through you the screen begins too blur and mildly shake,maybe even like sweat particles running down your screen. That too me would make it difficult too run thus making it scarier. With that your heart be gets very,very loud.

    Oooor, maybe you could make zombies slower (like…nice and shambly, that’d be really horrifying) than the player (with a few previously athletic zombels as an exception)…but much more swarmy and harder to kill. Maybe make a serverside thing that decides whether the zombies act as they currently do, or take on this new thinga. I, personally, find slower swarming zambies much more horrifying (I mean… like 20-50 zambies per swarm).
    OR make serverwide events take place! Like military personnel showing up on boats to kill the zombies, and any “potentially infected” survivors. Or enormous hordes moving in from outside the main island and just kind of going around on Chernarus.
    Would be flippin’ awesome.

    ….I haven’t played dayz before, but zombie games are a must for me and…well I just had a tiny joygasm. (shame there’s no underground area’s to explore. I’d love me some close quarters hair raising experiences.) So yeah, this is on my to get list once I get my computer back from my brother.

    Maybe like if a herd is approaching and is closing in on our camp, we’ll have to find a way to either make a decision where we have to drive them away or risk it by attacking them and take them out.

    I think that zombies shouldn’t be so powerful. I mean do you really want to have zombie spawn this powerful!? Im a fresh spawn no gear suddenly theirs a hoarde of 20 zombies who can run faster than me. That would suck. Just make the zombies alot weaker. I play 24/7 in my free time and over powered zombies is a problem on origins. Even more over powered scares me. Also everyone we can’t have all theese little crazy features because i can only carry so many things. I mean I can’t be carrying a 20 slot gun cleaning kit all the time and water disinfectin and a tooth brush and also have to drop my pack to run away from zombies all while im getting destroyed by the bandits.

    plz make it possable to do things while sitting like eating getting wepons out etc and wouldent it be nice to eat all the sardenes at once insted of it takeing 5 goes to eat it all and can their be instructions on how to do things to help people know about what they can do ive just got the alpha and never played the mod it would help
