Dogs in DayZ

Survivors,

Some of you may have heard about this but one of the announcements from GamesCom 2012 was that dogs were going to be added to DayZ. After some investigation I ran across 2 videos posted by IGN.

The first video features a dog named Alsatian and its owner. The video shows the different dog commands, the commands include:

  • Slow Down
  • Speed Up
  • Stay
  • Track
  • Call Dog
  • Speak
  • Quiet
  • Warn
  • Follow Me

First Video

In the first video you can see the dog’s owner use the “Stay” command. The dog sits and the owner moves away from the dog. She then uses the “Call Dog” command, this lets out a whistle. The dog then runs to the owner. She uses the “Speak” command and the dog barks. That seemed kind of useless to me, it’s hard for me to imagine a situation where I would want my dog to bark. I usually don’t want to give away my position. The command that got my attention but wasn’t really highlighted in the first video was the “Track” command so I looked for a video with more information about that.

In the second video you can see how the Track command works.

Second Video

The video starts out with the dog and owner standing over a dead zombie. The owner uses the “Track” command on the body and the dog seems to sniff the body and take off after the person who was last near the dead zombie. While the dog is running the owner uses the “Slow Down” and “Speed Up” commands to control the movement of the dog. Each of those commands lets out a whistle and you see the dog react by adjusting its speed.

Final Thoughts

Overall I hope dogs don’t have a huge impact on the game. I can see them as an awesome asset in a players chance to survival but I hope there’s a downside to having one too. For example, a dog should be able to warn you if an enemy is nearby with growling or barking but at the same time it should bark at a rabbit running by. This way there is good and bad and it remains fair for people without dogs.

I also see some potential for more internal conflict for players. I know right now I tend to get overly attached to my character and any sign of trouble gets my heart racing. So I can imagine getting overly attached to my dog and the crushing effect it would have on me if he were to be hurt. I know there are a lot of animal lovers out there and I could see this being a huge decision for some people.

How do you think it would change your play style?

Dogs should definitely have downsides also, like random barking, hunger, thirst, maybe it will leave you if you don’t take care of it. Also I would imagine dogs living in this post apolyptic world to be somewhat traumatized and they might attack not only enemies but friends of the owner and even the owner. Or get scared of a zombie and run away. Realisticish psychology for them is what I’m after.

What would be really cool is if you could use a ‘Decoy’ option, where your dog runs away from your position while barking in order to get the zombies off your back

Yes! A decoy option would definitely help in the game.

Man I hope they don’t have the dog where it will hunt other players. I do NOT want a dog chasing me and trying to kill me. Then people would want to use dogs to kill people. 😛 So I hope they only kill zeds and the other things they said about dogs.

My worry is the food situation. I would think you would have to feed the dog in the game as well.

I was on a MYDAYZ#8 Namalsk server the other day and there were smaller food and water icons beside the original one, the server owner said they were to do with owning a dog, The dogs were not in the server as they were removed in the recent update, so this is definitely a feeding mechanic in the game which for some reason hadn’t been disabled in that server… 😀 I’m looking forward to them

One cool thing you can probley do with dogs is have them sit in an ambush spot and have them speak untill another player comes to investigate the dog, then while there investigating you can snipe them from a near by building or sneak up behind them.

I couldn’t refrain from commenting. This is fine with some foods, but other foods aren’t healthy for dogs.

Anyway, keep doing what you’re doing!…

Screw feeding the dogs meat. That’s the good stuff. It’s pasta and beans for ol’ Fido, I’m afraid 😛
